Hello!
Things are happening
Hello subscribers, this lovely community of EEYORITES! How was your summer? For my fellow Americans: did you have a good Labor Day? Are you reading anything interesting? Sound off in the comments if so, or just to say HOLA.
I’ve been on a writing hiatus, partly because I’m lazy and partly because I’ve been busy at work. But in the next few weeks, I will post a review of “Buckley: The Life and Revolution That Changed America” by Sam Tanenhaus. In preview: it was not a good book. Perhaps that is fitting, as Buckley never lived up to his early promise and became a malign goofball. Not great.
In any event, as you guys know, I love rock and pop music. Here are some tunes I’ve been enjoying recently. Enjoy these last few days of summer and live in anticipation of my next post!
“Feels Like the First Time” by Foreigner. An amazing song. Used to great effect in the end credits to the (also amazing) movie “Magic Mike.” This video is surprisingly fun — zero bullshit, just 5 guys rocking out:
“Here I Go Again” by Whitesnake. Everyone talks about this video, which is a beautiful model writhing around on a Jaguar. That’s hot, but the song is a passionate and raw statement about lost love. It is consoling to anyone who’s been through a rough breakup.
“To Live and Die in LA” by Wang Chung. These guys did the soundtrack to the eponymous William Friedkin movie. He’s one of my favorite directors, but this one isn’t his best. The movie is OK and features a young Willem Dafoe as a murderous counterfitter / artist with an ambiguous sexual orientation. Otherwise it is forgettable; the premise is better than the result. Anyway, this song, which plays over the opening credits, is pretty amazing. I’m a central coaster and don’t understand LA, but I imagine speeding down the PCH and seeing the expanse lit up at night while blasting this, particularly the octave repeating synth parts with the pedal pushed down and the engine revs …
God bless you, keep on keeping on, and remember that you aren’t alone.

in spite of wonderful weather, for us europeans most of summer has been a mix of unease and outright horror. I hope it was been better for our american cousins.
